RIP Grand Master Helio Gracie

Today the whole martial arts community is sad. Grand Master Helio Gracie passed away in Itaipava. I confess that I have no idea what to say about it, just that he will be missed by all of us that had the opportunity to meet him personally, and also by many that realise how much he contributed to the evolution and growth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I saw him a few times but it was last year that I finally had the chance to meet him at his son’s house near Barcelona, Spain. I still remember the master showing me his favourite technique, the choke (there is a video in YouTube that I will post here tomorrow). His mind and body were still agile and what really drew my attention was to see him climbing the stairs without using the hands, in a slow but resolute pace. That day I understood that Jiu Jitsu teaches us a lot more than just how to fight. He left us physically, but his example, philosophy and teachings stay.

Rest In Peace Grand Master, may God receive you in his arms.
